Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to US legislators and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's lawyer submitted the response acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer stated he would attempt to have the case thrown out for multiple causes including that his client, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was indicted shortly after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to take action against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative informed the magistrate they planned to file several legal requests to dismiss the case before a legal hearing, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a government lawyer was unlawfully designated to take over the legal matter.

Mr Comey's case was originally overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from the former president after his examination into an additional opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

The former director seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, chatting with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his spouse, his wife and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the previous administration dismissed.

Upon hearing to the court read his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was inquired if he understood the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he told the judge.

Historical Information

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's first term as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, James Comey caused a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the national vote that he was probing Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against the candidate were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys allege the former director gave untrue statements to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the Russia election probe. They say he provided false information to the Senate by claiming he had not permitted someone at the agency to leak to news outlets information about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also allege James Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, hinder and slow" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Through a recording the former director shared to his online platform after he was accused, he declared he was not guilty and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"Our household have understood for years that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he said. "We will not live on our bended knee."

"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The charges against James Comey surfaced after Trump shared on digital channels demanding his top legal official, Pam Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and other people.
