Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Team to Face Team India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected call-up.
Recent Form Result in Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the one-day international squad after managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Team Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia search for a answer to their opening batting issues.
Pace Additions and Fitness Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
